The LLT Network seeks to apply social learning theory and the concept of community of enquiry to the exploration and enhancement of learning and teaching in Scottish education.
The Network's projects examine conditions affecting both teachers as learners in the context of professional development and pupils as learners in the context of schools and other learning environments.
On this section of the site you can find more information regarding the Network in general, its objectives and its three projects, as well as the people who are coordinating the different projects.
Joining The Network
If you are interested in these issues you are invited to join the Network. Members of the Network include teachers and researchers from higher education institutions, teachers and head-teachers from schools, local authority personnel, and individuals from other organisations involved with school education. It is anticipated that people will become involved in the Network in different ways. Contact Alastair Wilson (

Project 1: Fostering and Evaluating communities of enquiry
Project 2: Teachers as Learners
Project 3: Understanding Learner Engagement
Capacity Building
Each project has provided excellent capacity building opportunities for participants. The approach adopted in each of the projects has been to involve all level three participants and fellows as co-investigators and full members of the project teams, taking a full part in all stages and processes of the research activity associated with the projects, including reviewing, conceptualization, planning, data collection, data processing, analysis, interpretation and reporting/academic writing. The pattern of engagement is regular (usually monthly) project team meetings accompanied by ongoing use of the VRE. This approach has meant that more time is taken for each stage of the research process, but the benefits appear to be not only for individual participants in terms of capacity building, but also in terms of the quality of the research itself.
